We commonly find that many people in Australia haven’t heard of moissanite (a valuable gemstone) and confuse it with cubic zirconia (Cz) (crystal, costume jewellery material), which is a very different stone. Cz will always be considered inexpensive and of little value, it is generally worthless and has no resale value. Cubic zirconia (Cz) and moissanite may look similar at a distance, but differ drastically in beauty, quality and value. An example of Cz jewellery found in many other stores in Australia. An example of moissanite jewellery found in Australia would be that found at Forever Chic Jewellery. Check a side by side comparison of Forever Chic Jewellery Moissanite Versus other stores that sell Cubic zirconia jewellery, that can often get confused as being the same as Moissanite, (further down in the article).
For a stunning ring that will last a lifetime, if choosing between moissanite and Cz we recommend choosing moissanite over cubic zirconia. Moissanite has much more value, durability and brilliance than Cz and is considered far superior and prestigious than Cz. More well known stores and brands in Australia selling cubic zirconia though still charge very high prices.
Read on to learn the top key differences between moissanite and Cz and how you can ensure you are getting genuine moissanite and not just Cz which may include ensuring you get a genuine Moissanite certificate from international 3rd party authorities.
Moissanite consists of silicon and carbon, diamond consists of pure carbon. Cubic zirconia on the other hand contains a mix of zirconium and oxygen in its composition (synthetic crystal). In this regard, moissanite is similar to diamond, unlike Cz which doesn’t consist of any chemical compositions of diamond at all.
Moissanite is much tougher and more durable than Cz and will last a lifetime unlike Cz. On the Mohs Scale of Hardness which refers to the durability of a gemstone and more specifically its ability to resist scratching, Moissanite scores 9.25-9.5 out of 10, and is the closest gemstone to diamond which scores a perfect 10. This makes Moissanite very durable and resistant to damage. In fact, moissanite is even more resistant to heat than a real diamond, meaning that even if they were in a fire, they would still retain their sparkle and form.
One of the reasons diamonds are valued so highly is for their durability, and moissanite is an excellent choice for a replacement. Cz on the other hand, only scores an 8-8.5 on the Mohs Scale, which is considered much lower so it simply won’t stand up to a lifetime of wear like moissanite.
In terms of toughness, which refers to the gemstone’s resistance to breaking, moissanite wins hands down over Cz. Moissanite has a toughness rating of 7.6 PSI while Cz is only 2.4 PSI. This means that moissanite is over 3 times more resistant to breaking or chipping than Cz.
Cz clouds over easily and loses its sparkle at a fairly fast rate. Cz can take on a cloudy, hazy appearance within not too long of wearing it. This can come from household detergents, cosmetics, body oils and dust, quality and so on causing the Cz stones to lose their sparkle and appear dull. High quality moissanite rings on the other hand, will maintain their sparkle and brilliance for a lifetime. This is largely due to its light performance or refractive index (RI), the amount of light that is bent as it goes through the gemstone and gives it its brilliance / sparkle.
Moissanite has a Refractive Index (RI) , an indicator of the gemstone’s brilliance of 2.65 whereas diamond’s RI is lower at 2.42. Moissanite has an extremely high level of brilliance and excellent light performance. This is one reason it is a favourite in engagement rings as it has much higher brilliance and fire than even a diamond. Cubic zirconia has an RI 2.15 – 2.18, which is much lower than moissanite and diamond.
To most, it is very difficult to tell the difference by observation if a ring is moissanite or Cz. In order to ensure you are receiving moissanite and not just Cz you should follow these steps.
Although Cz is more affordable, if you’re looking for the best overall diamond alternative for the long term, moissanite is far superior owing to its durability, quality, brilliance and value. In terms of prestige and class, nothing can take the place of a diamond, but moissanite comes close. Cz, unfortunately, will always be considered inexpensive and of little value.
